Abstract
  • The history and development of microwave spectroscopy andnuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy have much incommon. In this Account, we discuss the less widely appreciatedconnections between the parameters measured using the twotechniques. Selected examples from our laboratory and from therecent literature attest to the utility and importance of theseconnections. For example, how are nuclear spin−rotation tensorsand NMR chemical shifts related? Why should chemists beinterested in absolute magnetic shielding scales? What can chemistslearn about trends in spin−spin coupling constants from thehyperfine parameters measured in microwave and molecular beamexperiments? The increasingly important role of quantum-chemicalcalculations in the interpretation of the microwave and NMR datais also highlighted.
