  • Chemiluminescence (CL) detection integrated with amicrochip capillary electrophoresis (MCE) system thatwas fabricated in poly(dimethylsiloxane) was demonstrated for chemical and biochemical analyses. Two modelCL systems were involved here: metal ion-catalyzedluminol−peroxide reaction and dansyl species conjugatedperoxalate−peroxide reaction. Different strategies basedon three chip patterns (cross, cross combining with Y, andcross combining with V) to perform on-line CL detectionfor MCE were evaluated and compared in terms ofsensitivity, reproducibility, and peak symmetry. The chippattern of cross combining with Y proved to be promisingfor the luminol−peroxide CL system, while the chippattern of cross combining with V was preferred for theperoxalate−peroxide system where CL reagent could notbe effectively transported by electroosmotic flow. A detection limit down to submicromolar concentrations (midattomole) was achieved with good reproducibility andsymmetric peak shape. Successful separation of threemetal cations such as Cr(III), Co(II), and Cu(II) and chiralrecognition of dansyl phenylalanine enantiomers within1 min revealed distinct advantages of combining MCEwith CL detection for rapid and sensitive analyses.
