Abstract
| - The sensitivity of the spectrofluorometric technique canbe improved by a factor of about 3.6 using a mirrorcoating cell. In the case of a large working range, thenonlinear relationship due to the absorbance of solutionsbetween concentration of the analyte of interest andfluorescence intensity (called inner filter effect) must becorrected. This paper suggests a universal inner filtercorrection equation based on the physical absorbancephenomenon of a mirror coating cell that only dependson the solution absorbance spectra and the cell parameters. These parameters are determined with rhodamineb standard solutions and a simplex method-based mathematical fitting. The methodology has been successfullyapplied to the correction of classical and synchronousspectra in absorbent media. The partial least squares(PLS) quantification of a mixture of trace levels (∼1−10μg L-1) of six polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs)by synchronous fluorescence is possible, even in anabsorbent matrix. This simple method allows extensionof the analytical field of fluorescence quantification to alarge working range in absorbent solutions.
