Abstract
| - Laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICPMS) is used with two variations ofprincipal components analysis (PCA) for objective, routinecomparisons of forensic materials without time-consuming and destructive sample dissolution. The relativeconcentrations of trace elements in a solid sample areexamined to provide a “fingerprint” composition that canbe used for identification and source matching of thematerial. Residue samples are matched to bulk materialsusing PCA. Variation of laser focus and PCA are also usedto diagnose the severity of elemental fractionation in twometal samples that are prone to fractionation, brass andsteel. Such fractionation remains the most significantlimitation for accurate quantitative analyses by LA-ICPMS.
