Abstract
  • Determination of compound-specific carbon isotope values by continuous flow isotope ratio mass spectrometryis impacted by variation in several routine operatingparameters of which one of the most important is signalsize, or linearity. Experiments were carried out to evaluatethe implications of these operating parameters on bothreproducibility and accuracy of δ13C measurements. Anew method is described for assessing total instrumentaluncertainty of routine compound-specific δ13C analysis, incorporating both accuracy and reproducibility. Thesefindings have important implications for application ofcompound-specific isotope analysis in environmentalgeochemistry and in particular for the rapidly developingfield of isotopic investigation of biodegradation and remediation of organic chemicals in contaminant hydrogeology.
