Abstract
| - Seventeen members of the solid solution series Ba2-xSrxLuBiO6 have been prepared, and their crystalstructures were studied using a combination of powder synchrotron X-ray and neutron diffraction methods. The oxides all adopt a double perovskite-type A2BB‘O6 (A = Ba, Sr; B = Lu, B‘ = Bi) structure as aconsequence of ordering of the Lu3+ and Bi5+ cations. As the average ionic radius of the A-site cations(Ba/Sr) decreases the LuO6 and BiO6 polyhedra tilt and the structure changes from cubic Fm3̄m (0 < x< 0.375) through monoclinic I2/m (0.375 < x< 1.0) to monoclinic P21/n (1.0 < x< 2.0)
- The structures of the ordered double perovskites A2LuBiO6 alter as the average size of the A-site cation increases due to cooperative tilting of the octahedra. Three phases with different tilt patterns are shown to form in this series of oxides.
