| - Thermodynamic equilibrium calculations performedwith the program ChemSage reproduce the observedbehavior of metals in refuse incineration furnacesand reveal general trends. Presentation of theresultsas a series of small graphs allows a quick overallview of the significant species. The calculationspredictthat all of the Hg present and most of the Cd andPb volatilize, as is observed in practice. Theamountsof Zn and Cu volatilized depend on the reductionconditions and on the amount of Cl present. As andSb also volatilize, but Mg, Ca, Fe, and Ni do notvolatilize under the prevailing oxidizing conditions.Thepresence of sulfur stabilizes many of the metals insulfate phases at low temperature but has little influenceabove 800 °C. Under locally reducing conditions,it may favor the volatilization of Sn as SnS. Moredetailed studies, in which comparison is made withdata from industrial furnaces with measurements carriedout under well-defined conditions, are required toanswer specific questions.
