Abstract
  • Flow-through column tests were conducted toinvestigate the products of degradation of aqueoustrichloroethene (TCE) in contact with granular ironmetal. The results indicated the degradation processto be pseudo-first-order and the rate constant tobe relatively insensitive to the initial concentration ofTCE over the range from about 1.3 to 61 mg/L. Theprincipal degradation product was ethene, followed byethane with substantially smaller amounts of otherC1−C4 hydrocarbons. About 3.0−3.5% of the initialTCEappeared as chlorinated degradation products, including the three dichloroethene isomers and vinylchloride. Although the chloride mass balance wasgenerally between 98 and 102%, a maximum of 73% ofthe carbon could be accounted for in the identifiedproducts. Based on the low concentrations ofchlorinated degradation products in the solution phase,it is proposed that most of the TCE remains sorbedto the iron surface until complete dechlorination isachieved.
