Abstract
  • Historic and current mining activities have contaminated stream sediments around the world with toxicheavy metals. A general lack of premining baselinedata makes it difficult to quantify the extent ofcontamination and to set realistic remediation goals.These problems can be solved by modeling thedownstream dispersion of metal anomalies basedon dilution mixing of anomalous and tributary sediments.The model allows calculation of the dispersion curvesof metals in stream sediments both before and aftermining and also allows the quantification of anyanthropogenic exaggeration of an anomaly. Miningactivities were found to amplify naturally occurringmetal anomalies up to 3 orders of magnitude, extendingdownstream dispersion trains from a natural limitof around 20 km to as much as 500 km. The dilutionmixing model provides a useful tool for calculatingpremining dispersion trains and quantifying the effectsof mining on a river basin. Such information isrelevant to the understanding, litigation, and remediationof contaminated rivers around the world.
