| Abstract
| - A groundwater treatment technology based on catalyticreductive dehalogenation has been developed to efficientlydestroy chlorinated hydrocarbons in situ using a reactivewell approach. The treatment process utilizes dissolvedH2 as an electron donor, in the presence of a commercialpalladium-on-alumina catalyst, to rapidly reduce commonchlorinated aliphatics such as trichloroethylene andtetrachloroethylene into nonchlorinated hydrocarbonssuch as ethane. Rapid reaction rates permit the deploymentof a treatment unit within a dual-screened well bore,allowing contaminated groundwater to be drawn from onewater-bearing zone, treated within the well bore, anddischarged to an adjacent zone with only one pass throughthe system. A demonstration groundwater treatmentsystem based on this concept was evaluated in a chlorinatedhydrocarbon contaminated aquifer at a major Superfundsite. The system rapidly destroyed a variety of commoncontaminants such as TCE and PCE and maintained itsperformance for a test period of 1 year. Operation of thetreatment system was optimized to maintain catalyst activityand to prevent formation of intermediate compounds.
