Abstract
  • The chemical composition of secondary organic aerosolformed in an environmental chamber from ozonolysisof 1-tetradecene in humid and dry air was determinedusing a thermal desorption particle beam mass spectrometer(TDPBMS). The major products are α-hydroxytridecylhydroperoxide and bis(α-hydroxytridecyl) peroxide in humidair and symmetric C26 and asymmetric C14 secondaryozonides in dry air. The hydroperoxide is formed by reactionof stabilized Criegee biradicals with water vapor, andthe peroxide (a peroxyhemiacetal) is formed by subsequentreaction of the hydroperoxide with tridecanal. Thesecondary ozonides are formed by reactions of stabilizedCriegee biradicals with tridecanal and formaldehyde.Tridecanoic acid was also observed in both experiments.These compounds have very low vapor pressures andare stable on the 3-h time scale of the environmental chamberexperiments. When collected aerosol was analyzed bygas chromatography, the hydroperoxides, peroxides, andsecondary ozonides thermally decomposed to more volatilecompounds, including tridecanal, tridecanoic acid, and afew unidentified products.
