Abstract
  • The temporal course of the photooxidation of sulforhodamine-B (SRB) in aqueous media illuminated by visiblewavelengths in the presence of TiO2 has been examined todetermine the nature of the intermediate species producedand to explore the operative reaction pathway(s). Twopathways are described to account for the differences inthe final photooxidation products whose nature dependson the different modes of adsorption of the dye on the metal-oxide mediator. In the SRB/TiO2 system, when SRB isadsorbed on the positively charged TiO2 particle surfacethrough a sulfonate group cleavage of the SRB chromophorestructure predominates and N-de-ethylation occurs onlyto a slight extent with the major photooxidation productsbeing diethylamine and carbon dioxide. In the presence ofthe anionic dodecylbenzenesulfonate surfactant DBS,when SRB is near the negatively charged DBS/TiO2 interfacethrough the positive diethylamine group N-de-ethylationoccurs preferentially before destruction of the structure withthe major products being acetaldehyde and carbondioxide.
