Abstract
  • Uranium isotopic compositions were determined in over500 soil samples from the Greenham Common Air Base andin surrounding west Berkshire and north Hampshire,England to detect potential contamination from an alleged1958 nuclear incident. Owing to the large number ofsamples collected for the study, the short reporting timeexpected, and the potentially subtle nature of anycontamination, a rapid and highly precise method ofuranium analysis was developed. High precision 238U/235Umass spectrometric measurements are required to see slightexcesses in any anthropogenic component. The reproducibility for measurements of uranium isotopic ratios in standardsand soil samples was better than 0.26% at the 3σuncertainty level. Despite an intensive study around theairbase no evidence was found for any contamination byuranium of anomalous isotopic composition. Plutoniummeasurements were also made to support the U analysisand were found to be consistent with atmosphericbomb fallout for the United Kingdom. The detection ofsubtle (though radiologically insignificant) amounts of Ucontamination around a nearby nuclear weapons siteillustrates the usefulness and effectiveness of this approachin environmental surveys.
