Abstract
  • A simple method for the quantitative determination ofelemental sulfur on oxidized sulfide minerals is described.Extraction of elemental sulfur in perchloroethylene andsubsequent analysis with high-performance liquidchromatography were used to ascertain the total elementalsulfur resulting from the oxidation of arsenopyrite, pyrite, marcasite, chalcopyrite, and chalcocite under variousconditions. An initial pretreatment to remove any sulfuralready present on the mineral surface created a chemicallyclean surface and guaranteed that any elemental sulfurobserved was the result of the laboratory oxidationexperiments. Because the extraction method andchromatographic analysis are performed ex situ and arenot constrained by the parameters of the experimentaloxidation reaction, the method can be used for thequantification of elemental sulfur after any laboratoryexperiment.
