| - The ability of a rhamnolipid mixture produced byPseudomonas aeruginosa UG2 to solubilize the pesticidesatrazine, trifluralin, and coumaphos was compared withthat of the surfactant Triton X-100. The values of maximummicellar solubilization capacities (Ksupra [mmol pest/molsurf]) for trifluralin and coumaphos in Triton X-100 weredouble those for the rhamnolipid mixture, whereas atrazineKsupra value for the rhamnolipid biosurfactant was in thesame range as that for the synthetic surfactant. Despitehaving the second largest Kow value of the three pesticides,coumaphos had the lowest affinity for both surfactantmicellar phases. Comparison of values of aqueous-micellesolubilization rate coefficients (kOWM) obtained for trifluralinshowed that the pesticide is solubilized at the same rate inboth surfactant micellar phases. A much lower value ofmicellar-aqueous transfer rate coefficient (kOMW) for trifluralinin the rhamnolipid mixture suggests that the pesticide isbound more tightly to the biosurfactant micellar core anddiffuses out to the aqueous phase at a lower speed thanthat observed for the synthetic surfactant. Future researchcan benefit from this work by studying the effect thatmicellar solubilization can have on the bioavailability oforganic pollutants for microbial uptake.
