Abstract
  • Solid-phase extraction room-temperature phosphorimetryis evaluated for screening polychlorinated dibenzofurans inwater samples. The organic pollutants are extractedfrom water samples on octadecyl bonded silica membranes.Water extraction is rapidly performed on a 13 mm diskby using a 100 mL syringe and a stainless steel filter holder.Room-temperature phosphorimetry is directly performedon the extraction membrane, which results in analysis timesof approximately 10 min per sample. Limits of detectionat the sub-parts-per-billion (ng·mL-1) are obtained with 100mL of water sample. The selectivity of the technique isappropriate for total polychlorinated dibenzofurans analysisin the presence of concomitants such as pesticides, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, polychlorinated biphenyls, and polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins. At the presentstage, this methodology can obviate costly chromatographicanalysis of uncontaminated water samples. Since it is anondestructive technique, it could be used in tandem withchromatographic analysis for specific compound identification of positive samples.
