| Abstract
| - The extent of methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE) contaminationin private wells near gasoline stations, which lack therelative protection afforded many public waters suppliesthrough zoning and routine testing, was examined. Sampleswere collected from 74 private wells near 21 randomlyselected gasoline stations and from 21 control wells, oneper facility. Two hypotheses are tested: (1) privatewells downgradient and close (<0.5 mi) to gasoline stations(case wells) are more likely to have MTBE contaminationthan private wells upgradient and distant (>1.5 mi)(control wells); and (2) private wells near gasoline stationsselling oxygenated gasoline are more likely to haveMTBE contamination than private wells near gasolinestations selling conventional gasoline. Data on theconcurrence of MTBE and other gasoline constituents arepresented. Results: MTBE concentrations ranged from<1.0 μ/L (μg/L) to 61 μg/L, with a mean of 12.0 μg/L. MTBEcontamination of ≥1 μg/L was detected more frequentlyin case wells (28%) than control wells (5%) (p = 0.015). MTBEcontamination of ≥1 μg/L occurred more frequently inprivate wells near facilities selling oxygenated gasoline(38%) than private wells near facilities selling conventionalgasoline (20%) (p = 0.11). Statistical significance mayhave been achieved with a larger sample size. Benzene(0.5 μg/L) was found concurrently with MTBE in only onewell, which also had the highest concentration of MTBE.
