Abstract
| - Colloids may become detached from surfaces in environmental systems as a result of chemical and physicalconditions. Many researchers reporting on colloidaldetachment in natural and model systems have stoppedshort of mechanistically and quantitatively describing theirobservations. In this work, a mathematical construct ispresented that quantitatively determines the effect ofthermodynamics and hydrodynamics on particle detachmentfrom surfaces in granular media. Using the Buckinghamπ theorem, a mathematical model is structured based ongoverning dimensionless groupings. Determining dimensionless numbers elucidates conditions conducivefor detachment in engineered and natural porous media.Published detachment data are compared to the mathematicalmodel developed herein and provide support for itsutility. Extensions of this technique have utility in manyapplications where fluid interaction with particulate-ladenporous media is encountered.
