| Abstract
| - Metal complexation characteristics (conditional stabilityconstants and available ligand concentration) were measuredwith differential pulse anodic stripping voltammetry(DPASV) for the trace metals cadmium, copper, and leadin two Connecticut rivers. These parameters permit calculationof the free ion concentration [M2+ (H2O)n] for eachmetal. Parallel experiments in waters from the samerivers were conducted to measure metal uptake in arepresentative freshwater diatom (Stephanodiscus hantzschii)and chlorophyte (Chlorella vulgaris). For copper theresults of the uptake experiments are consistent withcalculated speciation based on the measured DOMcomplexation characteristics, supporting the belief thatvoltammetry can provide valid information about metalbioavailability. Although uptake of lead did not closely followspeciation predictions, an inverse relationship betweenuptake and the concentration of available ligands in eachriver existed, similar to that of copper.
