Abstract
  • Soil/air equilibrium partitioning has an important impacton the environmental distribution and fate of many organicchemicals. Modeling approaches that cover this processcommonly assume that sorption in soil only occurs in soilorganic matter. However, many researchers have alreadyshown that this is not even correct for nonpolar compoundsin air-dry soils. Here, we extend the existing data set onsorption in air-dry soils by using a large and very diverse setof organic compounds covering many different functionalgroups for two standard soils and for relative humiditybetween 50 and 90%. The experimental data presented hereas well as those from the literature are then used toexamine two different modeling approaches: one thatonly considers absorption in soil organic matter and onethat also considers adsorption to mineral surfaces. The resultsclearly show that sorption in air-dry soil cannot beexplained when adsorption to mineral surfaces is ignored.Only the model that considers both sorbing phases, organic matter and mineral surfaces, gives good agreementfor all experimental data. Our model for predictingadsorption to mineral surfaces does not require anyfurther fitting with experimental data; thus, it can readilybe incorporated into existing fate models in order to improvethe description of the soil/air partition process.
