| - A nickel−cadmium battery factory released about 53 tonsof mostly cadmium and nickel hydroxide suspendedsolid waste between 1953 and 1979 into Foundry Cove,which is tidally connected to the Hudson River estuary. Amajor Superfund dredging cleanup in 1994−1995 removedmost of the cadmium from the sediment from within FoundryCove. Here, we demonstrate that the cleanup reducedcadmium tissue concentrations (hepatopancreas and legmuscle) in an important fishery species, the blue crabCallinectes sapidus near Foundry Cove, but also across abroad reach of the Hudson River. Before the cleanup,cadmium concentrations in crabs were 4−5 times higheron average than after the cleanup and geographic variationin crab cadmium concentration along the Hudson Riverestuary was strongly reduced after the cleanup. The factorof reduction in crab tissue concentrations was far lessthan the factor of reduction of export of cadmium fromFoundry Cove into the Hudson or the factor of reductionof cadmium sediment concentrations within the cove followingthe cleanup. This unique study demonstrates the efficacyof a major dredging cleanup and quantifies the spatialand temporal impact of the cleanup. It demonstrates thatcleanup of a point source can have dramatic effectsover large spatial scales.
