Abstract
  • The adsorption on powdered activated carbon (PAC) ofecotoxic or potentially ecotoxic micropollutants (ten pharmaceuticals, four X-ray contrast media, and eightindustrial chemicals) present in a biologically treated municipalwastewater is studied. All but the X-ray contrast mediaare eliminated with high efficiency at an economically feasiblePAC dosage of 10 mg/L. Based on the experimentaldata, the competition between the background organicmatter and the micropollutant for the active sites of theadsorbent is modeled with the help of the adsorption andtracer analysis supported by the Ideal Adsorption SolutionTheory. With granulated activated carbon, adsorptionisotherms are determined by spiking. Based on theseexperimental data and modeled parameters, a lay-out of fixed-bed adsorbers may be simulated.
