Abstract
| - Experiments with the continuous precipitation of calcium carbonateare reported in this study.Particle size distributions were measured on-line and interpretedby means of the simultaneousnucleation and the transformation models developed in part 1 of thissequence. Three regimesof precipitation are reported in this study, governed by thesupersaturation and liquid phase[Ca2+]/[CO32-]ionic ratio. These comprise of a heterogeneous regime involvingcalcite and vateritenucleation at moderate[Ca2+]/[CO32-]ionic ratio in an unscaled reactor, homogeneous nucleationof vaterite followed by transformation to calcite in a scaled reactorat low and moderate [Ca2+]/[CO32-] ratio, and formation ofstable vaterite at high[Ca2+]/[CO32-]ratio. The particle sizedistributions in the different regimes are well fitted by theapplicable model from part 1 orearlier studies of single-species precipitation. Whereappropriate, kinetic parameters obtainedfrom the fits are correlated with supersaturation by power lawmodels.
