Abstract
| - Wet oxidation and nanofiltration are employed in an integratedsystem for the treatment ofbioresistant industrial wastewaters. The partial oxidationproducts formed during a brief periodof pretreatment in a low pressure WO reactor are separated bynanofiltration, and largermolecules are recycled into the reactor where they undergo furtheroxidation. Experiments werecarried out with polyethylene glycol as a model compound in aqueoussolution, representingpolymer manufacture wastewater. The results demonstrate that byusing a combination of anoxidative and a separative step, a higher selectivity of the overallprocess toward partial oxidationcan be achieved. The permeate leaving the filtration step ismainly composed of short chainorganic acids which could be readily biodegraded in a subsequentbiological treatment, ordischarged if concentrations are low.
