Abstract
| - The Friedländer synthesis of 2,2‘;9‘,2‘ ‘-ter[1,10]phenanthroline and 2,2‘-bi[1,10]phenanthroline proceeds smoothly and is preferred over metal-mediated couplings to provide the free ligands. Hexadentate complexation is observed for the title ligand with K+, while a double-stranded trinuclear complex is obtained with Cu(I). The tetrahedral geometry around Cu(I) is highly distorted, and the intermetallic distance is about 3 Å.
- The title molecule, 2,2‘;9‘,2‘ ‘-ter[1,10]phenanthroline can beprepared from 2,9-dichloro-1,10-phenanthroline in three stepsthrough the corresponding diacetyl intermediate. The ligand actsas a hexadentate with K+, while two molecules form a trinuclear, helical complex with Cu(I), which evidences π-stacking interactionsand Cu−Cu distances of 3.01−3.04 Å. Electrochemical analysisshows a strong interaction between the Cu(I) centers.
