Abstract
  • Evaporation of metals, like W, Mo, V, and In, in the presence ofwater vapor and subsequent sulfidizationhas yielded bulk quantities of nested fullerenes, nanotubes, andstructures with negative curvature (inorganic fullerene-likeIF). Dissolving alkali-metal salts into the water sourceafforded alkali-metal intercalation and staging (n =6)of the IF structures after sulfidization. The intercalatedmoieties were found to be stable in air and even in water. The intercalated IF structures could be dispersed in alcoholicsuspensions, and electrophoretic deposition from thesuspensions yielded thin films of the IF particles. The films ofintercalated IF showed respectable and time-invariantphotoeffects. Furthermore, low adhesion and robust tips forscanning probe microscopy were prepared by depositingintercalated IF film on Si tips. Other applications, which arecurrently investigated, are briefly mentioned.
