Abstract
  • We report here the first synthesis of mesoscopic, monodisperse particles which containnanoscopic inclusions of ferromagnetic cobalt ferrites. These monodisperse ferromagnetic compositeparticles readily self-assemble into magnetically responsive photonic crystals that efficiently Bragg diffractincident light. Magnetic fields can be used to control the photonic crystal orientation and, thus, the diffractedwavelength. We demonstrate the use of these ferromagnetic particles to fabricate magneto-optical diffractingfluids and magnetically switchable diffracting mirrors.
