| Abstract
| - Quaternary alkaloids of two Kenyan medicinal plants belonging tothe genus Zanthoxylum, Z.usambarense and Z. chalybeum, wereexamined using ion-pair HPLC. Both plants containedsimilar alkaloids, but colored protoberberines were found only inZ. chalybeum. From the stemsof Z. usambarense a new alkaloid namedusambanoline (1) was isolated andcharacterized.
