Abstract	A new synthesis of (±)-clavizepine (1a), based on thedibenzoxepinediol 10 as main intermediateis described. The key step is the contraction of the oxepine ringto give the xanthene-9-carboxyaldehyde 11, on which the nitrogenated ring can bereadily assembled.
