Abstract
  • The rigid bichromophoric systems7a·2BF4 and7b·2BF4, comprising either adimethoxybenzene(a) or dimethoxynaphthalene (b) unit, eachcovalently linked through a six-bond norbornylogousbridge to a methyl viologen unit, were synthesized with a view tostudying long-range intramolecularenergy (EnT) and/or electron (ET) transfer. X-ray crystallographyhas been used to illustrate that7b·2BF4 has the ability to undergoself-organization on crystallization to form extended lineararrayswithin the crystal lattice. Preliminary photophysical studies on7b·2BF4 indicate the presenceofan additional rapid nonradiative process (rate constant > 2.5 ×1010 s-1) in thebichromophorecompared to a model dimethoxynaphthalene unit, and possibleexplanations for this process arepresented.
