A study into the use of a chiral phase-transfer catalyst inconjunction with acetone cyanohydrin to effect the enantioselective formation of α-amino nitriles from α-amidosulfones is described. This novel catalytic asymmetricStrecker reaction is analyzed with regard to the possiblemechanistic basis.
