| Abstract
| - A detailed experimental study of the infrared characteristics ofCO in H2O ice matrixes (10−150 K) has beenperformed. The effects of thermal and ion irradiation processeshave also been examined. H2O:CO icemixtures have been obtained both by co-deposition of H2Oand CO (at 10 K) and by diffusion (at ∼27 K) ofCO into a preformed water ice film. It has been confirmed that COdoes not diffuse into the ice at temperaturesbelow ∼26 K. Results have been compared with previously reporteddiffusion experiments at 42 K. Laboratoryexperiments show that the profile (shape, width, and peak position) ofthe CO band depends on the structureof the water matrix it is embedded in and on the process (co-deposit ordiffusion) by which the mixture hasbeen obtained. This is attributed to the different amount ofenergy involved in the process which forms themixture. These studies are important to understand the physicaland chemical properties of ices. Furthermoreinformation on the history of molecular ices in astrophysicalenvironments are obtained comparing observedspectra with those taken in laboratory.
