Abstract
  • Single crystals of room temperature γ-irradiatedglycine have been studied with electron nuclear doubleresonance (ENDOR) and X-band and high-frequency continuous waveelectron paramagnetic resonance (EPR)spectroscopies and electron spin echo spectroscopy. EchoEPRspectroscopy was used to distinguish the radicalswith different phase memory relaxation times. Three radicals havebeen detected, which have been identifiedas−CH−COO-(radical A), CH2−COO- (radical B), andCH2−NH2 (radical C). Whereas radicalsAand B had been observed by other authors in the past, radical C was notdetected previously. The hyperfinetensors of the two CH2 protons and of one of theNH2 protons were determined by ENDOR. ESEEM(electronspin echo envelope modulation) and HYSCORE (hyperfine sublevelcorrelation spectroscopy) experimentswere performed in order to obtain the relative signs of the hyperfinecoupling constants of the three protons. The principal values and the principal directions of the hyperfinetensors are in agreement with the hypothesisof a nonplanar structure of the radical. UnrestrictedHartree−Fock calculations have been carried out fordifferent conformations of radical C. The calculated hyperfinecoupling constants are compared with theexperimental results.
