| Abstract
| - Translational diffusion processes of the benzyl radical (BR)created by the photodissociation from dibenzylketone (DBK) were studied by using the transient grating (TG) method inorganic solvents (hexane,cyclohexane, ethanol, and 2-propanol). The values of the diffusionconstants (D) of BR, DBK, and carbonmonoxide (CO) and the rates for the self-termination reaction of BR inthese solvents are accurately determinedfrom the TG signals. The ratios of D of BR to that ofDBK are independent of the solvent, and they areclose to 1.25, which is expected from the ratio of the molecular volumeof BR to that of DBK. This resultis contrary to those of radicals created by the photoinduced hydrogenabstraction reaction, which showanomalously slow diffusions. A possible origin of this differenceis discussed by comparison of the spindensities, dipole moments, and polarizabilities of BR and the radicalsproduced by hydrogen abstraction.
