Abstract
  • The photodissociation spectroscopy and dynamics of the methoxyradical Ã(2A1) ←X̃(2E) transition havebeen investigated using fast radical beam photofragment translationalspectroscopy. The à state of bothCH3O and CD3O is observed to predissociate viacurve crossings with one or more repulsive electronicstates. The photofragment yield spectrum consists of the C−O stretchprogression and combination bands based onthis mode. The major product channel is CH3(CD3) + O, with a threshold 3775cm-1 above the zero-pointlevel of the à state. The product translational energydistributions reveal ν2 umbrella excitation inCH3(CD3), yielding considerable insight into the dissociationdynamics for this channel. CD3O shows amode-specific dynamical effect in which energy deposited in parent umbrellamotion preferentially populates umbrellamotion in the fragment. The product channels CH2 +OH (CD2 + OD) and D + CD2O are alsoobserved, with evidence that the methylene fragment is predominantly in theexcited ã(1A1)state.
