Abstract
  • Redox reactions of aqueous chloramphenicol (CPL) solutions withH•, eaq-, OH•,(CH3)2(OH)C•, andCO2•-were studied using pulse radiolysis techniques. Rate constants forthe reaction of these radicals with CPLwere determined. Using MV2+/MV•+ asthe standard couple, the one-electron redox potential of theCPLwas determined. High-performance liquid chromatography wasemployed for the investigation of thedegradation products. The possible formation of aryl radicals fromCPL and nitrosobenzoic acid (one of theseveral products formed in irradiated CPL aqueous solution) and itssubsequent reaction with O2 can lead tothe formation of aryl peroxyl radicals. The reactivity of variousp-substituted aryl peroxyl radicals with2,2‘-azinobis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonate) (ABTS) wasstudied. Such a reaction product could beresponsible for observed side effects of CPL.
