Abstract
  • Infrared spectroscopy has been used to detect HO2 and HO3 radicals in H2O + O2 ice mixtures irradiatedwith 0.8 MeV protons. In these experiments, HO2 was formed by the addition of an H atom to O2 and HO3was formed by a similar addition of H to O3. The band positions observed for HO2 and HO3 in H2O-ice are1142 and 1259 cm-1, respectively, and these assignments were confirmed with 18O2. HO2 and HO3 were alsoobserved in irradiated H2O + O3 ice mixtures, as well as in irradiated H2O2 ice. The astronomical relevanceof these laboratory measurements is discussed.
