Layered nickel alkanethiolates are found to exhibit antiferromagnetic coupling along the S−Ni−S chain withthe ordering temperature increasing linearly with decreasing alkyl chain length. Theoretical calculations areperformed to study the origin of magnetic moments and interactions in these layered systems.
