Abstract
  • The kinetics of both the ions and radicals formed upon photolysisof diphenylmethyl chloride, (4-methoxyphenyl)phenylmethyl chloride, andbis(4-methoxyphenyl)methyl chloride in acetonitrile andpropionitrile are examined by picosecond pump−probe spectroscopy. Bothradical pairs and ion pairs are formeddirectly from a common excited state. In addition, the geminateradical pair decays by electron transfer toform either the contact ion pair or a covalent bond, as well asundergoes diffusional separation to free radicals.
