| Abstract
| - New observations on the effect of surface morphology (corrugation)on the structure of vapor-deposited iceare presented. Amorphous quartz and single-crystal Si(100) wereused as substrates. Water was depositedon the bare substrates and on the substrates covered with organizedorganic thin films (OOTF). By coatingthe substrates with mixed organic monolayers, controlled corrugationwas achieved, without affecting thechemical nature of the surface. Information on the surfacecorrugation on different scales was obtained byatomic force microscopy and wettability measurement techniques. The ice phase was determined by in situinfrared absorption measurements. Correlation was observed betweenthe surface roughness on a scale thatis characteristic for the distance between ice nucleation centers andthe deposited ice structure. Moleculardynamics simulations could reproduce the experimental observations andprovide an insight into its origin.
