Abstract
  • A high iron content saponite from Griffith Park, CA, (griffithitevariety) was pillared by aluminumpolycation solutions with different Al/clay ratios. X-raydiffraction shows that the intercalation processbegins when aluminum polycation solutions are added, being completedduring the dialysis washing ofthe samples. The amount of Al fixed by the intercalated solids isabout 1.6 mmol of Al/g of clay. The surfacearea of the intercalated solids is about 300 m2g-1, decreasing about 20% for pillaredsamples (calcinatedat 500 °C). The total acidity ranges between 470 and 615 μmolg-1, and the pyridine adsorptionindicatesthe existence of only Lewis acid sites. The materials are veryactive in the dehydration of 2-propanol givingrise exclusively to propene, with activities of around 30 μmolg-1s-1.
