Abstract
| - Poly{(4-nitrophenyl)-3-[N-[2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl]carbazolyl]]diazene}was prepared andits photoinduced birefringence, diffraction grating, andphotorefractive asymmetric two-beam gain couplingwere studied. The monomer was obtained by performing azo couplingin a two-phase water−dichloromethane system in the presence of a phase transfer catalyst.Photoinduced birefringence of upto 0.09 was observed and diffraction efficiencies of up to 25% wereobtained, with atomic force microscopystudies revealing that the grating profile exhibited a sinusoidalshape. Asymmetric two-beam couplingis observed, indicating photorefractive properties, but the energytransfer phenomena are more complex, involving also diffraction by the photoinduced gratings. Thecombination of these three opticalpropertiesphotoinduced birefringence, surface gratings, and two-beamcouplingis believed to be uniqueand may eventually produce an all-optical device built of a singlepolymer film.
