Abstract
| - A mathematical model for the development of the particlemorphology in emulsionpolymerization has been developed. The model accounts for phaseseparation leading to cluster nucleation, polymerization, polymer diffusion, and cluster migration. Themodel has been used to simulate batchemulsion polymerizations of methyl methacrylate on a polystyrene seedfor which experimentallydetermined particle morphologies have been reported. A goodagreement between experimental resultsand model predictions was achieved. On the other hand, sensitivityanalysis showed that the final particlemorphology was not significantly affected by either the initial clustervolume or the cluster nucleationrate constant.
