Abstract
| - The synthesis and the phase behavior of a homologous series ofpolymers of 4,4‘-[1,12-dodecanediylbis(oxy)]bis(benzoic acid) withbis[N-[[2,4-dihydroxyphenyl]methylene]alkylamino]nickel(II),-palladium(II) and -oxovanadium(II) are reported.Calorimetric and X-ray diffraction data and dynamicviscosity measurements are consistent with the occurrence of nematicmesomorphism for all polymers.The nematic phase, which is monotropic for some of thenickel-containing polymers, is comparativelymore stable for those containing palladium. Polymers containingthe oxovanadium group show alsoenantiotropic smectic mesomorphism. The mesophase properties ofligand systems are also discussed.
