| Abstract
| - L’exploitation d’une des plus importantes mines de pyrites, étroitement liée au développement de l’industrie chimique, s’est faite dans un contexte général d’augmentation des besoins. Pour ajuster la production sur ses besoins, Saint-Gobain a, dans un premier temps, procédé à des investissements pour rationaliser l’extraction. Ensuite, la Compagnie a pris en main l’organisation du travail et transformé le lien ambivalent qu’elle avait avec les mineurs en un lien de dépendance salariale, tentant aussi de rationaliser la gestion de la main-d’œuvre. Les politiques salariales organisées autour de l’exploitation du produit et ses perspectives passent d’un patronage proche de la bienfaisance traditionnelle à un paternalisme autoritaire, pour se replier, avant la première guerre mondiale, sur des politiques d’intervention limitées.
- The exploitation of mines of pyrites from Saint-Gobain to Sain-Bel 1870-1914. The exploitation of the pyrite mine at Sain-Bel, which was closely tied to the chemical industry, took place in a context of a rising demand for this mineral. In order to adjust production to demand, Saint-Gobain, during its initial phase, invested in rationalizing the extraction process. Later, the Company took charge of the organisation of labor and transformed the formerly ambivalent relationship it had with the miners into wage dépendance, as well as transforming the entire labor managerial system. The company’s social policies were in part determined by the perspectives it had for the future exploitation of the product. Traditional welfare policies were replaced by an authoritarian paternalism which later gave way to a policy of limited intervention on the eve of the First World War.
