| - Abstract. In the wake of a visit to California by a French delegation including the representatives of the DGT and of the Data Processing Department, the latter suggested launching an experimental project of a packet data transmission network similar to the one that would lead to Arpanet. In 1972, Louis Pouzin, endowed with a solid experience in data processing, was consequently recruited by the Data Processing Department, the department in charge of the “Computer plan” launched in 1966 by the French government with a view to developing French data processing research and a French data processing industry. This article recounts the events leading up to the making of the experimental, inter-computer network called Cyclades, its technological choices, inspired by, but different from, those of the Americans, its industrial policy, its funding, its international links..., its destiny. Based on an adjustment of the oral presentation, this presentation will use the original transparencies (in the form of pictures), the very ones used in the international meetings of that time (1976-1977).

À la suite d’une visite en Californie d’une délégation française regroupant des représentants de la DGT et de la Délégation à l’informatique, cette dernière se propose de lancer un projet expérimental de réseau de données par paquets analogue à celui qui conduira à Arpanet. En 1972, Louis Pouzin, doté d’une solide expérience en informatique, est donc recruté par la Délégation à l’informatique, service en charge du « Plan calcul » lancé en 1966 par le gouvernement français pour développer une recherche et une industrie informatique française. Cet article retrace l’élaboration de ce réseau expérimental inter-ordinateurs baptisé Cyclades, ses choix technologiques, inspirés mais différents de ceux des Américains, sa politique industrielle, son financement, ses liens internationaux... et son destin. Basée sur la mise en forme d’une présentation orale, cette présentation utilise les transparents (reproduits en images) originaux, ceux utilisés dans les réunions internationales de l’époque (1976-1977).
