| Abstract
| - Style: Cause and Result of Linguistic Change. This article is located within the perspective of diachronic sociolinguistics. Applied to the transformation of Latin into Romance, this discipline has elaborated a conception of language change which focuses on the internal variation proper to the speaker and assumed by the writer. Both produce fluctuations in their linguistic diasystems via their enunciative choices. These fluctuations bring about various changes in the organisation of the diasystems which are both realised through and influenced by the choices made. Examples from Latin authors of the Classical and Late Latin periods serve here to illustrate this process. The main implication of this approach, whereby each utterance requires the identity of the original speaker to be taken into account, is that the study of a given author’s style only has any meaning if the actual manner in which he constructs his own language is analysed. It is, then, in this sense that stylistics and linguistics (dia- or synchronic) are seen to come together.
- Ce travail se situe dans la perspective de la sociolinguistique diachronique. Appliquée à la métamorphose du latin en roman, cette discipline a élaboré une modélisation du changement langagier qui privilégie la dynamique interne portée par le sujet parlant et investie par le sujet écrivant. Ceux-ci provoquent par leurs choix énonciatifs des fluctuations dans le diasystème de leur langue qui entraînent différents déplacements dans l'organisation de ce diasystème, à la fois exprimé par ces innovations et influencé par elles. Des exemples puisés dans différents auteurs littéraires de la latinité classique et tardive illustrent ce processus. Le résultat global de cette voie d’approche est que tout énoncé requerrant un investissement du sujet d’où s’origine son expression, l’étude du style d’un auteur ne prend vraiment sens que si est analysée la manière dont il construit sa propre langue. Et, à ce compte, la stylistique et la linguistique, dia- ou syn-chroniques ,se rejoignent.
