| Abstract
| - The concept of public arena dates back to the late 1990s. It was one of the outcomes of an inquiry into the history of the sociology of publics and public problems at Chicago, early 20th century. This investigation led to the discovery of a pragmatist conception of publicity. The legacy of John Dewey, George H. Mead and Robert E. Park made it possible to imagine an alternative to the discursive, deliberative and dialogic theories of the public sphere, inspired by Hannah Arendt or Jürgen Habermas. It also led to a different understanding of Joseph Gusfield’s dramaturgy and rhetoric of public problems. By using a concept of public arena, the author sets forth a series of points. He proposes to describe the forms of public discussion in its many ways and settings; to root the manufacture of public problems in the experience of problematic situations; to reconnect this experience with dynamics of inquiry and experimentation by publics; and not to overestimate the power of words by forgetting the ecology of public problems.
- Le concept d’arène publique a été développé à partir de la fin des années 90, à la faveur d’une enquête sur les racines de la sociologie des publics et des problèmes publics à Chicago au début du xxe siècle. Cette enquête a conduit à exhumer une conception pragmatiste de la publicité. La reprise de l’héritage de John Dewey, George H. Mead et Robert E. Park a permis d’imaginer une alternative aux approches discursives, délibératives ou dialogiques de la sphère publique, inspirées par Hannah Arendt ou Jürgen Habermas. Elle a aussi conduit à lire autrement les travaux de Joseph Gusfield sur la dramaturgie et la rhétorique des problèmes publics. En recourant à un concept d’arène publique, l’auteur invite à décrire les formes de la discussion publique dans ses multiples modalités et milieux, à réancrer la formation des problèmes publics dans l’expérience de situations problématiques, à reconnecter cette expérience avec des dynamiques d’enquête et d’expérimentation par des publics et à ne pas surestimer le pouvoir des mots en oubliant l’écologie des problèmes publics.
