| - Résumé. Cet article tente de circonscrire l’économie des discours gymniques médicaux et orthopédiques entre 1817 et 1847. Il s’agit de décrire l’institutionnalisation d’une investigation des corps (masculins et féminins) au sein de l’orthopédie. Nous analyserons la manière dont les acteurs de la spécialisation contribuent à alimenter le processus en systématisation des pratiques d’exercice corporel, en nous appuyant sur les controverses - méthodologiques, pratiques et symboliques -, inhérentes au processus de structuration de l’espace social médical, et particulièrement à la formation de l’orthopédie.
- Birth of a scientific field: orthopaedics as the manufacture of gymnastics. Medical field, orthopaedics speciality and bodily exercises (1817-1847). This article attempts to circumscribe the economy of the orthopaedic and medical gymnastics discourses between 1817 and 1847. The aim is to describe the institutionalisation of research on the body (both male and female) in the orthopaedic field. We shall analyse the manner through which the actors of this medical speciality contribute to feed the systematisation process of physical exercises, basing our study upon the methodological, practical and symbolical controversies that are inherent to the structuring process of the socio-medical field, particularly in the case of orthopaedics.
