Abstract
  • The diachronic study of the relationships between societies and their environments is one of the fields that have asserted themselves with the utmost dynamism in recent years within the French social sciences and humanities’ community. Founded in 2008, the RUCHE, francophone network of environmental historians, has organized an international conference held in Lyon, in June 2018, with the title “Writing environmental history in the 21st century: sources, methods and practices”. Among its main objectives, four guidelines had been identified: assess and discuss the main scientific innovations and projects that have recently advanced the case for multidisciplinarity in the study of environmental history; explore new research directions and unexplored topics in environmental history; reflect on how we use sources (oral, written, or extracted from the Earth) and how different kinds of data can yield different kind of knowledge and how best to combine them; finally, evaluate and question the social utility of environmental history. Starting by a brief account of the RUCHE’s history, the article continues with a summary of the main trends presented in Lyon, and ends in suggesting which are the main and emerging scientific challenges for the near future.
